TRI-STATE MINIATURE HORSE SHOW
ON MAY 6, 2012, IS AN UNBELIEVABLE SUCCESS !!!!

Please read the following which are excerpts from an article published in a local newspapers. We had well over 150 spectators attend the show and the horse trailers were lined up "as far as the eye could see" !! Besides an excellent number and quality of AMHA registered horses, we had over 25 "VSE's" (very small equines) attend the show. These VSE classes averaged almost 8 entries per class and the competition was fierce to win the Blue Ribbon. The horse rescue made a significant amount of money ............ overall, the show was UNBELIEVABLE !!

Excerpts taken from article published in the Register Citizen newspaper on May 7, 2012. Story by Jason Siedzik:

BETHLEHEM MAY 6, 2012 — Be they pets or show animals, miniature horses have homes in New England. But for those that were abandoned or facing slaughter, some horses need shelter.

New Milford’s Scarlet Rose Farm Equine Rescue offers shelter to 40 horses. On May 6, miniature horse owners from throughout the northeast descended on the Bethlehem Fair grounds to help raise money for the horse rescue, thanks to a familial connection.

“I feel it’s been very educational for the public,” said Scarlet Rose Farm Equine Rescue founder Kate Thurlow.

The Tri-State Miniature Horse Society has sponsored miniature horse shows in the past, primarily in New York. However, the society decided to hold a show in Connecticut to not only broaden its audience, but also to help raise money for the Equine Rescue. According to Thurlow, miniature horse owners from as far as Pennsylvania and Maine, as well as Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York, brought their equines to Bethlehem.

Kate Thurlow, of the Scarlet Rose Farm Equine Rescue in Washington CT, has helped to place 30 horses with new owners, avoiding the grind of the auction or Craigslist circuit, as well as potential slaughter. While the show concentrated on miniature horses, Scarlet Rose Farm Equine Rescue takes in all breeds of horses, and is an entirely volunteer effort.
Tom O’Connell, the Tri-State Miniature Horse Society’s president, said that his daughter’s friendship with Thurlow helped inspire the show. Sunday morning marked the first time the Tri-State Miniature Horse Society has held a fundraising show, and unlike other shows, the competition in Bethlehem was also open to registered miniatures and other very small equines. Broad appeal was the plan, O’Connell said, opening the doors to show equines and pets.

“What we tried to do was appeal to the two sides,” said O’Connell.

Miniature horses can be popular pets, especially among older owners, due to their comparatively easier care. However, according to O’Connell, the judges were looking for the same qualities in miniature horses as full-size equines. “The thrust of the miniature horse is to look exactly like a regular horse,” said O’Connell.

Specific categories at the show had their own criteria, such as hunter, driving and negotiating an obstacle course.  In all, O’Connell estimated that just under 60 horses entered the show, with a total of 175 entries among the horses. This turnout surprised not only O’Connell, but also Thurlow, and could be enough to spur a repeat engagement. Thurlow said both parties hoped to make the show, and subsequent fundraiser, an annual event.

“I’m very, very happy with the turnout and the support of the rescue,” O’Connell said.
